Getting to Know You: Job and Life

This lesson gives you the tools to answer a very common question when you meet someone and to reply in a way that sounds natural.

1. The Main Question

• Que faîtes-vous dans la vie ? /Vous faîtes quoi dans la vie ? → What do you do for a living? (formal)

• Tu fais quoi dans la vie ? → What do you do for a living? (informal)

• Tu fais quoi comme métier ? → What's your job? (informal)

2. How to Reply Naturally

Here are several ways to answer, depending on your situation. It's more natural than just giving a simple job title.

• Je suis [ton métier]. → I am a [your job].

• Ex: Je suis ingénieur. → I am an engineer.

• Je travaille dans le / la [ton domaine]. → I work in [your field].

• Ex: Je travaille dans l'informatique. / Je travaille dans le marketing. → I work in IT. / I work in marketing.

• Je travaille pour une entreprise qui s'appelle... → I work for a company called...

• Je travaille chez ... → I work at...

• Ex: Je travaille pour une entreprise de logiciels. → I work for a software company.

• Je suis à mon compte. / Je suis en freelance. → I'm self-employed. / I'm a freelancer.

• Je suis au chômage / Je cherche un travail. → I'm unemployed. / I'm looking for a job.

• Je suis étudiant(e). → I am a student.

• Je suis étudiant(e) en [ton domaine]. → I am a [your field] student.

• Ex: Je suis étudiant en droit. → I am a law student.

• Ex: Je suis étudiante en marketing. → I am a marketing student.

• Je suis en stage. → I'm doing an internship.

• Ex: Je suis en stage de journalisme. → I am a journalism intern.

• Ex: Je fais un stage de plomberie. → I'm doing a plumbing internship.

• Je suis à la retraite / Je suis retraité(e). → I'm retired.

3. Mini dialogue

— Tu fais quoi dans la vie ? → Hey! What do you do for a living?

— Moi, je suis à mon compte. Je développe des sites web. Et toi ? → I'm a freelancer. I develop websites. And you?

— C'est intéressant ! Je suis étudiant en marketing. → That's interesting! I'm a marketing student.

— Ah, super ! → Oh, that's great!
